Introduction

Material Management is a scientific technique, concerned with Planning, Organizing & Control of flow of Materials, from their initial purchase to destination. In the earlier years, Materials Management was treated as a Cost Centre, since Purchasing Department was spending money on materials while Store was holding huge inventory of materials, blocking money and space. Subsequently with the process of liberalization and opening up of global economy, there has been a drastic change in the business environment, resulting in manufacturing organizations exposed to intense competition in the market place. Manufacturers worldwide have been working out various strategies to face the above challenges and to cut down manufacturing costs including through savings in material costing to remain competitive. On the other hand, Inventory is a list of goods and materials, or those goods and materials themselves, held available in stock by an enterprise. An organization's Inventory can appear a mixed blessing since it counts as an asset on the balance sheet, but it also ties up money that could serve for other purposes and requires additional expense for its protection. Please keep in mind, “It’s easy to turn cash into inventory, but the challenge is to turn inventory into cash”. In order to familiarize these matters, DCCI Business Institute (DBI) is going to organize a day long Workshop on ‘Material and Inventory Management’
